            Varanasi (Inde) - Le bidonville de La Kharbuza est un refuge pour quelques centaines de familles
déshéritées.
J’ai traversé de nombreux bidonvilles. Jamais je ne m’y suis jamais arrêté plus d’une ou deux journées. 
Là, pendant un mois, j’ai découvert une micro-société dont certains habitants ne sortent jamais, alors que d’autres résident ici parce qu’ils ne trouvent pas à se loger ailleurs, comme des chauffeurs de rickshaws ou de vélos-pousse, des commerçants ambulants ou musiciens de rue…
Tous, ou presque, appartiennent à la caste des intouchables. Un statut qui les rend invisibles au reste de la société indienne. 
Ils tentent de survivre en triant les déchets. Certains vendent du thé, des bonbons et des cigarettes à l’unité ou des objets religieux. Certains ont même de minuscules échoppes. Les plus habiles réparent de vieilles carcasses de voitures qu’ils parviennent parfois à revendre. Mais beaucoup tirent leurs maigres ressources de la mendicité.

deprived.
I had passed through many slums in my life. I had never stopped there for more than a day or two. There, for a month, I discovered a micro-society from which some inhabitants never leave, while others live here because they cannot find accommodation elsewhere, such as rickshaw or bicycle rickshaw drivers. , street vendors or street musicians…
Almost all of them belong to the untouchable caste. A status that makes them invisible to the rest of Indian society. They try to survive by sorting the waste. Some sell single tea, candy and cigarettes or religious items. Some even have tiny stalls. The most skilled repair old car wrecks, which they sometimes manage to resell. But many get their meager resources from begging.
