A rare view of Germans and Indigenous Peruvians circa 1930's

Founded in 1920 in Munich, the German National Socialist Workers Party (NSDAP) had among its supporters Germans residing in all countries of the world. The presence of former army officers emigrated after World War I allowed the rapid spread of National Socialist ideas among members of established German colonies around the world, as well as the establishment of National Socialist organizations, even before 1930.

The first grouping of party members abroad took place in 1929 in Paraguay, being followed by other countries in 1930. At the initiative of Gregor Strasser, leader of the Reich organization, an organization that welcomed supporters living abroad with the task of propaganda for the party among Germans was created in 1931 under the leadership of Hans Nieland.

The NSDAP in Peru:

Existing documentation on the NSDAP in Peru is scarce and is disseminated in various European and North American archives. It follows that the first members registered for the party in Lima in 1932; three years later the number increased to the point that the NSDAP press service published a note in Berlin titled “ The Germans in Lima join the N.S.D.A.P ”. The total number of party members, however, would not exceed 200 .

The IG Farben company was, as in other countries, the main channel of the NSDAP in Peru, However, a number of German companies organized the activities and dissemination of NSDAP propaganda in regions where German migrants were settled. Thus, for example, the Hilbck & Kuntze was in charge of the Pacasmayo and Chiclayo region; the company Arens & Lessel that of Piura; the Emmel & Detgen and Basten that of Arequipa and Cuzco and the firm Roedinger & Co. Ica.

The documents roughly reveal the party structure in Peru. The party headquarters was in Lima and was under the direction of Carl Dedering, who until his deportation with hundreds of other Germans in 1942, he also acted as a German Honorary Consul in Lima. The other positions in the leadership cadre were that of assistant to Dedering, that of party treasurer and of the German Colony, that of mediator, that of the person in charge of finance, that of cultural director, that of director of the National Socialist popular welfare, that of director of the organization (Organisaltionsleiter), that of the person in charge of military service and that of a propagandist.

Regarding local groups, only two have been found: one in Arequipa and the other in Lima. The head of the latter was H. Wieland and was organized into six cells:

The Hoffmann group, which met in the drawing room of the German College in Miraflores
The Lowe group that met in the conference room of the German College in Miraflores
The Franz group, which met at the party headquarters located in the Belén Building
The Duschek group that met at the headquarters of the German Association on Mogollón Street.
As far as is known, in addition to a chief, the local groups had an alternate chief, a treasurer and a press chief.

On the support bases there is no more information, only that there was one in Cuzco who was in charge of an Austrian with the surname Albrecht. However, considering that the Austro-German colony of Oxapampa had raised the NSDAP flag, it would not be surprising if this had also been a support base.

The documents do not give a greater account of the activities of the NSDAP in Peru. After the outbreak of war, however, a good number of German business owners were blacklisted and the Peruvian police observed them carefully, noting that some carried out acts of espionage. The actions of the Peruvian government against the citizens of the Axis led the party leader, Carl Dedering, to take precautionary measures: he burned the party cards; the most important were deposited in the German Legation; the mandatory monthly party meetings were replaced by general meetings of the German association; Members' books and other books from the party and the Labor Front were collected and work nights were suspended.

Despite the precautions taken, Dedering feared more severe measures by the Peruvian government

"Apart from these measures, we must be clear that despite all this camouflage, we may be attacked at any time, since the next government measures will undoubtedly be directed against the entire Deutschtum and against any association of Germans."

And his fears were not false. After the United States declared war on the Tripartite Pact countries, most Latin American countries followed in January 1942. Except for a few countries, most adhered to the continental defense plan proposed by the Americans. In this context, in January 1942 the Peruvian Government ordered the members of the NSDAP to be taken prisoner and transferred, together with the diplomats, to an internment camp in Chosica, from where three months later they would be deported to the United States. The deportations of the Germans continued until 1945.

German settlers arrived in Peru in the mid-19th century, with the first wave of immigration organized by Baron Kuno Damian Freiherr Schutz von Holzhausen in 1853. Many of these German immigrants established themselves in the cities of Tingo Maria, Tarapoto, Pucallpa, Moyobamba, and in the department of Amazonas. Some also settled in the town of Pozuzo, which is known for its intense German and Austrian heritage.

Quechuas: The largest indigenous ethnic group in Peru, with various cultural subgroups and a vibrant cultural heritage.

The interaction between indigenous Peruvians and German settlers has been complex, with some German settlers integrating into Peruvian society and others maintaining their distinct cultural traditions. Today, many Peruvians are descendants of both indigenous and European ancestry, with a mix of cultural influences shaping their identity.
