2. The Captain and The Engineer: One Day

"Aiden!" Blinking, a pair of vibrant blue eyes focused away from the bright window as a deep laugh echoed in the workshop. Squinting, the young man known as Aiden rubbed his eyes as the laugh nearby settled into a chuckle and continued, "Keep staring out that window like that, Son, and you'll go blind with the Sun like that." Aiden gave a soft, nervous laugh as he reached up to wipe sweat from his brow as his father came around from the other side of the shop to stand beside him. "Let's see how you're doing over here."
As Aiden's father began to inspect his work, Aiden's attention returned to the window, and his eyes widened in excitement. In the distance, he could see a massive airship approaching the city. He could even hear the powerful, huge blades whirring loudly now that it was getting closer! What he would give to be there up close as it docked high above the city!
Suddenly Aiden felt a weight on his shoulders and he hunched slightly, his father's deep booming laugh echoing again as the man's arm draped over his son's shoulders. "Would you like a few minutes alone with the window?" He shook his son's shoulders as Aiden's face turned pink and he rolled his eyes. "Papa!" "Don't 'Papa' me! We'll watch this one but then we need to get back to work. The sooner we finish, the sooner we can go home and eat."
Together, the two of them watched as the distant bell rang and shouts could be heard high in the towers as the massive airship began to dock. "Can you imagine getting into the engine on something like that?" Aiden dreamily wondered aloud. His father chuckled and squeezed his shoulders before releasing them. "I'm sure it would be absolutely fascinating." The young man turned and glanced up at this father. "Do you think I'll be good enough to work on one of those airships one day?!" The man smiled softly. "I think you definitely have the potential. Look how well you've done with Mr. Reynolds' jetboard. I know he'll be very pleased." His hand patted the cool metal, then looked into his son's eyes and smiled encouragingly. "I believe you can do anything, Aiden. If you want to work on an airship one day, you do that. If you want to stay here with your old man and run this shop, you do that. You are young; only fifteen years old. You have your whole life ahead of you to decide what you want."
Aiden grinned at his father, feeling so much admiration and appreciation for the man who raised him and gave him belief in himself. He knew most young men his age were expected to take after the family business but Aiden's father had always been encouraging him to follow his dreams. "That's what I want! All of it! I want to be good enough to work as an engineer on an airship like that." He turned to point out the window where the massive airship was finally docked. "I want to fly the skies and see new places and meet new people! I want to fight pirates and go to a ball and dance! And I will write home all the time too! Then one day?" He glanced back at his father and smiled warmly. "I want to come home and take care of you and Mama and work in this shop after you." His father chuckled and and patted his shoulder. "Then you do that, Aiden. If that's what you want then you reach for the stars and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. You live your life. You only have the one, right?" "Right!" Aiden beamed at his father and took his wrench in hand and began to get back to work.
His father chuckled and shook his head. His son's enthusiasm and excitement was bittersweet to him. He knew he would support his son if that ever came to pass but he sure would miss him. As he went back to his own work station and picked up his tools, he looked up and sure enough Aiden was gazing out the window again. How Aiden looked in that moment, the light of the sunset hitting him and reflecting the longing look in his eyes, his father knew that one day Aiden would find the courage to go. He'd miss him, of course, but it was his pride as a father to see his son happy and find his own joy in a rather otherwise bleak world.
