This picturesque marina is one of the few parts of the old city that survived the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It has a striking history as the place from which the Pilgrim Fathers left for America and as the birthplace of Piet Hein.

In the past, people in Delfshaven earned their living by fishing herring and distilling gin. Historic Delfshaven has always managed to keep its authentic looks, with the old-fashioned corn mill De Distilleerketel as an important landmark.

Originally Delfshaven was part of Delft. In 1795 it became an independent municipality, to be annexed by Rotterdam in 1886.

Delfshaven was created in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to connect the city of Delft with the Maas. Since then, the ships have been able to reach the Nieuwe Maas from Delft via the Delftse and Delfshavense Schie. The harbor town of 'Delfshaven' was created around the lock. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A setback in growth took place when at the end of the Hoekse and Kabeljauwse disputes (around 1490) the Hoeken wreaked havoc. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.

Deze pittoreske jachthaven is een van de weinige stukjes oude stad die het bombardement op Rotterdam in 1940 doorstaan hebben. Het heeft een markante geschiedenis als de plek vanwaar de Pilgrim Fathers naar Amerika vertrokken én als geboorteplaats van Piet Hein.

Vroeger verdiende men in Delfshaven de kost met de haringvisserij en het distilleren van jenever. Historisch Delfshaven heeft zijn authentieke looks altijd weten te behouden, met de ouderwetse korenmolen De Destilleerketel als belangrijk herkenningspunt.

Oorspronkelijk was Delfshaven een onderdeel van Delft. In 1795 werd het een zelfstandige gemeente, om in 1886 door Rotterdam geannexeerd te worden.

Delfshaven ontstond in 1389, toen de Delfshavense Schie werd gegraven om de stad Delft een verbinding met de Maas te geven. Sindsdien konden de schepen vanuit Delft via de Delftse en Delfshavense Schie de Nieuwe Maas bereiken. Rondom de sluis ontstond het havenstadje 'Delfshaven'. Het had de status van een 'kolonie van Delft'. Een terugslag in de groei vond plaats toen aan het eind van de Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten (rond 1490) de Hoeken enorme verwoestingen aanrichtten. In het begin van de zestiende eeuw telde Delfshaven iets meer dan 100 huizen en 400 inwoners.
