This rather long-haired, shaggy bee has a yellow collar and its tail is a conspicuous orange-red,
The 2nd adbominal segment usually has a yellow band, but this is often broken in the middle and may be missing altogether in some workers.
Among the first bees to appear in the spring.
It is common in gaedens and many other habitats, where it often breeds wall above ground in birds' nests and nest boxes.
It also breeds in compost heaps and other piles of rubbish,
