            Small Copper,  ' Lycaena phlaeas ', ( Lycaenidae ),

Despite its small size, the Small Copper catches the eye due to its brightvmarkings, Although some of the upperwing surface is browm, this relatively background serves to highlight the vivid orange markings, The underwings have more subdued colours than upperwings although the pattern of markings is broadly similar, A subtle variation in wing marking exists across the species' range; in particular, the extent of the orange submarginal band on the hindwing shows considerable variation,
Male Small Copper are strongly territorial and it can be interesting to watch them defend ther " home patch " against intruding rivals, They even attack male butterflies belonging to other species on occasion.

Larval Foodplant,- Sorrel and dock ( both Rumex ),

Status,- Widespread and one of the commonest butterflies in the Britsh Isles,
