Le fantôme du Nord / The ghost of the North

            Cette saison hivernale qui se termine a été prolifique en observations de Chouettes lapone. Nous avons connu une irruption de ces majestueux strigidés. Cette image est le quatrième et le dernier individu que j'aurai croisé. J'ai eu la chance d'être invitée sur le terrain privé d'un ami où il se tenait. La marche pour pouvoir rencontrer cette lapone fut ardue car le température élevée avait fait fondre l'épais couvert de neige et il n'y avait pas de pistes. Nous avons dû la chercher dans un bois dense où elle était bien camouflée. Alors que le coucher du soleil arrivait elle s'approcha d'un champs. J'ai pris cette photo à ce moment là pendant que mon ami était tombé et pris dans la neige. Je ne pouvais rester insensible à ce regard profond. Elle commençait sa chasse regardant de tous les côtés, écoutant les sons sous la neige. Je n'ai malheureusement pas pu la voir en chasse car il a fallu retourner à la maison. Une autre amie avait eu un malaise en traversant le champs, elle a perdu conscience pour une ou deux secondes. Elle a dû rebrousser chemin avec l'épouse de notre guide. Les jours suivant les champs étaient inondés par la pluie et la fonte des neiges. Il était impossible à notre hôte d'aller voir si cette belle du Nord s'y trouvait toujours.

This winter season, which is ending, has been prolific in terms of observations of Great Grey Owls. We experienced an irruption of these majestic owls. This image is the fourth and last individual that I encountered. I was lucky enough to be invited to the private land of a friend where it was staying. The walk to be able to meet this Great Grey Owl was arduous because the high temperature had melted the thick snow cover and there were no trails. We had to look for the owl in a dense wood where it was well camouflaged. As sunset arrived, it approached a field. I took this photo at that moment while my friend was fallen and stuck in the snow. I could not remain indifferent to this deep gaze. It began its hunt looking in all directions, listening to the sounds under the snow. Unfortunately, I was not able to see it hunting because we had to return home. Another friend had fainted while crossing the field; she lost consciousness for a second or two. She had to turn back with our guide's wife. In the following days, the fields were flooded by rain and melting snow. It was impossible for our host to go and see if this northern beauty was still there.
