We were here primarily to stay overnight at Jamala Wildlife Lodge, a subject which I will come back to in image 5729.

After checking in at the Lodge reception we were sent to wander in the Aquarium until a light lunch was to be served at 13:00.

As soon as you enter there is a tank full of jellyfish which is illuminated by changing lighting.

It makes for an all-natural lava lamp effect. I do recommend skimming through all three of the related images to see what I mean.

I assumed that jellyfish were just simple creatures that it wouldn't be hard to look up the information on. As soon as I tried, though, I realised that "You know nothing, Jon Snow." Apparently they have rather complex lifecycles of which the form that we see here is just one stage. Thus I don't plan to explain it at this point; just enjoy the hypnotic forms and colours of this series of shots.

(Aside: There is a campaign by some scientists to drop the "fish" part of the name and just call them "sea jellies" or "jellies". Fish are by definition vertebrates. Sea jellies are clearly not. But then, neither are starfish. I suspect that the "jellyfish" label will be around for a while yet.)
