Steaming Over The Lehigh - a photo on Flickriver

For today's Steam Sunday here's another from this fun soggy fall chase with good friends.

On prior trips when the big passenger train consist from North Reading was wyed it was pulled out of Jim Thorpe by diesels across the old CNJ bridge to RIVER then reversed direction and 2102 would pull the train north over the Lehigh River via the new bridge before being pulled down the branch back into town. But for whatever reason for these fall trips the process was reversed (without diesel assistance) and the big train shoved straight out to Nesquehoning Junction then reversed direction pulling north over the new bridge affording the opportunity to shoot from the opposite direction.

Having only ever done this angle with freight train NRFF I wanted to try it with the steam train, so despite the driving rain I set up on the fence for the view across the river of the new span. The stout 4-8-4 built in the Reading Railroad's own shops in 1945 is on a stretch of the RBMN's mainline that is only three and a half years old since this bridge over the Lehigh River opened in February of 2020. This is MP 121 on the Lehigh Division and the bridge and new interlocking on this side known as RIVER created a wye by connecting two former CNJ lines that historically never connected from north to the west like this.
