When my Virginia plans fell through due to an unfortunate turn of events on my last full day of vacation I decided to just drive north and see what I could find. I finally settled on three distinct wish list items that I could hit in sequence on my way to North Jersey to see some friends. Two would turn out to be a bust but this first stop wasn't too bad.

As the unquestioned mecca for Baldwin diesel lovers SMS Rail Lines original operation in the Pureland Industrial Park has long been on my railfan bucket list. To learn more about this little railroad start here: www.smsrail.com/history

Once the largest builder of locomotives in the nation the mighty Baldwin Locomotive works struggled to compete in the modern era despite early entries in both straight electric and diesel electric technology. It built locomotives from 1832 until 1956 (although after 1951 it was the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Co.) The great Eddystone works bowed out a full 13 years before their arch competitor from the steam era, Alco, gave up the ghost in Schnectady both having lost out to the combined modern might of GM and GE's products.

So I suppose it's only fitting that this last bastion of Eddystone diesels still in daily revenue freight service work here just a half dozen miles as the crow files from the place of their birth across the Delaware River. Green and yellow SLRS 304 is a 1200 hp BLH S12 blt. Jul. 1953, three years before the end, as Monongahela Railway 415 and then later working in Minnesota as Erie Mining 404. The switcher is seen heading back toward the Pedricktown Road crossing light engine after pulling and spotting boxcars at the Coast Global Corp. warehouse right behind me.
