Heading West On Home Rails - a photo on Flickriver

Here is one from waaay long ago. Back when I lived in NOLA I was a member of the Lousiana Steam Train Association and volunteered when I could.

The seminal achievement of the group was the restoration of Texas and New Orleans (Southern Pacific) number 745 a 2-8-2 Mikado built in New Orleans at T&NO's Algiers Shops in 1921.

Donated by the SP to the City of New Orleans she was displayed at Audubon Park until after 48 years of sitting she was returned to operation by a dedicated group of volunteers steaming for the first time in late 2004.

The following May she embarked on a month long tour of Lousiana to celebrate the Lousiana Purchase Bicentennial. The thousand mile trip took her over rails belonging to BNSF, KCS, and CN in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi. This is day 1 of that amazing journey and appropriately enough she is running unassisted over her histories home rails, BNSFs former Southern Pacific (T&NO) Lafayette Sub mainline. She can be seen passing a quintessential South Louisiana vignette of an above ground cemetary cloaked in spanish moss bedecked live oak trees near MP 31 as measured west from New Orleans.
