Le balbuzard se nourrit uniquement de poissons capturés à la surface de l'eau : les poissons pèsent généralement entre 150 et 350 grammes mais ils peuvent atteindre exceptionnellement jusqu'à 1 kg et mesurer de 20 à 35 cm.

Balbuzard pêcheur 1ère année . Il possède une technique de pêche inégalée. Il repère sa cible en la survolant d'une hauteur de 10 à 20 mètres ou en pratiquant le vol stationnaire. Il plonge alors, tête la première, ailes repliées et serres en avant, immerge uniquement les pattes et ressort avec sa proie qu'il transporte jusqu'à son nid ou sur un perchoir où il la dévore. Des serres incurvées et des petites aspérités entre les doigts permettent au balbuzard d'agripper et de maintenir les poissons les plus glissants. Sur le chemin du perchoir, il est souvent harcelé par des corneilles ou d'autres rapaces qui tentent de lui dérober son butin.

He then dives, head first, folded wings and talons forward, immerses only the legs and emerges with his prey that he carries to his nest or on a perch where he devours it. Curved talons and small asperities between the fingers allow the osprey to grip and keep the most slippery fish. On the way to the roost, he is often harassed by crows or other raptors who try to steal his loot.
