Le geai possède des ailes courtes et larges, adaptées aux évolutions en milieu forestier. Cette morphologie n'est pas faite pour des déplacements à longue distance, et pourtant le geai est bien un migrateur dans une bonne partie de son aire. Ses déplacements migratoires entre massifs forestiers se font d'un vol direct plutôt lent, les oiseaux regagnant le couvert forestier dès que possible par sécurité. Il répugne à voler dans les espaces ouverts.

The jay has short and wide wings, adapted to evolutions in a forest environment. This morphology is not made for long distance movements, and yet the jay is indeed a migrant in a good part of its range. Its migratory movements between forests are made with a rather slow direct flight, the birds regaining the forest cover as soon as possible for safety. He is loath to fly in open spaces.
