By the end of July 1942, my dad had been a PoW for a few weeks, captured at Tobruk on 21st June. He kept a detailed diary all through his time in camps in North Africa, Italy and Germany and wrote about all aspects of daily life.

He approached this experience with his usual equanimity and had a philosophical attitude to those he encountered on the opposite side of the conflict. His sense of humour surfaces from time to time.

At last, on 25th May, 1945, he arrived home to his wife and their little cottage in the rural village of Claydon in Suffolk. I was born one week before Christmas the following year.

I have been privileged to have a friend who guided me through the publication of my dad's diary in book and kindle format. There are more details and several reviews of the book here:

This has been an emotional journey for me but one which I am glad I made. All my modest royalties received from the book are donated to the Red Cross: my father regarded their food parcels sent to the camps as key to the survival of many prisoners.
