Brașov - The Catherine's Gate - a photo on Flickriver

            The Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei) in Brasov, was built in 1559 for defensive purposes instead of the old gate destroyed by the flood in 1526. It is named after the monastery of St. Catherine, who was here earlier. It is the only original city gate that has survived since the Middle Ages.
Four small corner turrets symbolize the fact that the city had judicial autonomy and decides about the death penalty. Above the entrance of the tower there is the coat of arms of the city, a crown on the trunk of an oak tree and roots.
At the beginning of the 19th century, it was replaced by built next to the larger Şchei Gate.

Brama Katarzyny (Poarta Ecaterinei) w Braszowie, została zbudowana w 1559 roku w celach obronnych zamiast starej bramy zniszczonej przez powódź w 1526. Nazwana jest na cześć klasztoru św. Katarzyny, który znajdował się tutaj w dawnych czasach. Jest to jedyna oryginalna brama miejska, która przetrwała od czasów średniowiecza. 
Cztery małe narożne wieżyczki symbolizują fakt, że miasto posiadało autonomię sądową i decydowania decydowania o karze śmierci. Nad wejściem wieży znajduje się herb miasta, korona na pniu dębu i korzenie.
Na początku XIX wieku została zastąpiona wybudowaną obok większą Bramą Șchei.
