Pay the ferry man

            Not my usual style of photography but something inspired by some recent reading!

In Greek and Roman mythology, it was believed that the soul of a recently deceased person had to cross the fabled river Styx in order to travel from the land of the living to the land of the dead. In order to cross this river someone had to pay Charon or Kharon, the spiritual ferryman of Hades to carry the soul across. A coin to pay Charon for passage was therefore often placed in or on the mouth of a dead person, to ensure safe passage to the other side where the spirit would be free from haunting the living on this side of the river.
