Great Grandpa's Store. Pgh., PA - a photo on Flickriver

            Having recently found this photo of my great grandfather that I had misplaced for years, I wanted to share it with you all.

This is William Engemann in his grocery store in the early 1900's. 
The store was located in Allegheny or what is now called the North Side of the city of Pittsburgh, PA.
The small 2 story structure included the store at street level with living quarters above.

William was the son of German emigrants and was born in Ohio.
He and his wife had a garden where they would grow vegetables to sell in the store in the summer. They also produced their own canned goods and jellies or jams for sale.
Great Grandpa Engemann died in December of 1942.

Some of the things of interest seen in this photo are of course the bunch of bananas hanging from the ceiling, the pickle jar to the left of William, brooms, mops, rug beaters, baskets and sponges that are also hanging. The scale and wrap paper dispenser on the counter and the roll top bins of flour, sugar and beans to the far right.
The Campbells Pork and Beans box holding some sort of fruit or vegetable and the coffee grinder to the left of the coal stove. You can also make out the jars of jams and jellies at the far left that were home made. 

And then there was all that great vintage advertising such as Del Monte, Foulds Macaroni, Tetley Tea and Old Reliable Coffee just to name a few.

Of course I never met William but I am glad to have this photograph of him and his store.
