York visit 17 and 18 June 2025 (169 of 268)

            I didn't post anything yesterday because Virgin Media was down for more than 30 hours in our postcode area. Anyway, back to York:
Shambles #1
No tourist visit to York is complete without a trip along Shambles. Wikipedia has an excellent history of the street and its medieval, often timber-framed buildings, some of which date back to the 14th century. For many years, every building was a butchers shop- each with its own meat speciality. None of the current mix of shops is a butchers. Several of the shops on the street still have meat-hooks hanging outside and, below them, shelves on which meat would have been displayed. 
Today’s post shows the scaffolding at the top end of the lower section of Shambles, looking up from Greggs bakery shop on Pavement. I wish I could have posted a photo without the scaffolding, but that’s reality.
