The station has seen many changes since  I first travelled by train to it. Probably even more changes than when I first used to come by train to Manchester: in those days, the journey from St Helens terminated at the now demolished Manchester Exchange station. Gone is the grime of the steam train era replaced by the new roof, electronic arrivals and departures boards and automated ticket barriers. Gone too are the steam trains themselves – and most of the diesel ones. Overhead electric lines serve both trains and the Metrolink light rail service. One touching note was the quiet corner devoted to memories of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing.
