            Santa Maria Magdalena church, Zamora. An old city in Castile and León, Zamora is famous for numerous Romanesque churches dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. In fact, Zamora is the city with the most Romanesque churches in all of Europe. Founded by the Romans as Occelum Durii on a picturesque bank of the Duero, Zamora was little than just a stopover point on the road between Mérida (Emerita) and Astorga (Asturica Augusta). Nothing much had happened here before the area was conquered by the Umayyads in the 710s. It was, however, promptly recaptured by the Christians and incorporated in to the Kingdom of Asturias. After centuries of slow repopulation and development, Zamora grew to become an important religious center of the region. In the early 10th century, the city received its charter and was thriving, possibly even passing León. This made the city a coveted prize for the Caliphate of Cordoba. The city successfully withstood numerous attacks by the Muslims, but in 966, Almanzor captured the city. The Christians regained control under Alfonso V of León. Later on, in the 12th century, Zamora was strategically important in the wars between the Kingdom of León and the Almoravids and the Almohads. With many battles taking place in the immediate vicinity, and with the Christian armies emerging victorious, numerous churches were founded in the city at that time to commemorate the victories. This is why Zamora is a virtual Romanesque church architecture museum nowadays. Castile and León is the largest autonomous community in Spain, comprising the provinces of Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid and Zamora. It played a key role in the Reconquista, completed in 1492 by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and his wife, Queen Isabella I of Castile. This marriage also was indispensable in the process of the unification of Spain [October 11, 2018].
