The gilded bronze monument to Johan Strauss, an Austrian composer of light music, in Stadtpark, Vienna. If there is a city which is both an imperial capital full of glorious grandeur and a freewheeling, easygoing arts, culture and fine cuisine center, this is definitely Vienna. The spot on the bank of the Danube that would become Vienna has had a human population since late Paleolithic. Venus of Willendorf, the famous artifact found here, is 24,000 years old. The recorded history of the city began in 15 BC when the Romans founded Vindobona to serve as a defensive outpost against Germanic tribes. In the late Middle Ages, this area was under the rule of the Babenberg family, first as part of the Eastern March and later as the Duchy of Austria independent of the Duchy of Bavaria. The capital of the Holy Roman Empire since the 15th century, Vienna was also the resident city of the Habsburg dynasty which, at its prime, ruled a large part of Europe, from Sicily to the Netherlands and from Transylvania to Spain. This was mainly achieved thanks to a long series of dynastic marriages. Nevertheless, the empire survived numerous wars, e.g. with the Ottomans, Frederick the Great, Napoleon and Bismarck, until it collapsed after WWI. The dynasty itself became extinct in its male line in 1740 and was succeeded by the descendants of Maria Theresa, the eldest daughter of Charles VI and wife of Francis I, Duke of Lorraine. Vienna is often called ‘The City of Music’ and rightly so, as a host of luminaries including Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert, to name just a few, worked here. Another name for Vienna is ‘The City of Dreams’, as it was home to Sigmund Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis. Incidentally, Hitler, Stalin, Trotsky and Freud lived in Vienna just miles away from each other in 1913 and probably went to the same coffeeshops. With its numerous palaces and museums, parks and boulevards, sachertorte and schnitzel, and the entire Innere Stadt (the Inner City) a UNESCO World Heritage site, the modern Vienna is a top tourist destination [December 26, 2016].
