            Il Bharatanatyam è con molta probabilità uno degli stili più antichi di danza classica indiana: nato nel sud dell’India, presso lo stato di Tamil Nadu con capitale Madras, durante l’epoca Gupta (IV – VI secolo d.C.) si insinua nei templi, veri fulcri della vita religiosa, sociale, artistica ed economica indiana, dove non solo viene rappresentato sottoforma di arti figurative, ma viene soprattutto danzato dalle devadasi, serve del Dio desiderose di dedicare la loro vita danzante al servizio delle divinità installate nei templi

Bharatanatyam is most likely one of the oldest styles of Indian classical dance: born in southern India, in the state of Tamil Nadu with Madras as its capital, during the Gupta era (4th - 6th century AD) it insinuates itself in temples, true hubs of Indian religious, social, artistic and economic life, where not only is it represented in the form of figurative arts, but is above all danced by the devadasi, servants of the God eager to dedicate their dancing life to the service of the gods installed in the temples
