Violet Carpenter Bee - Blauschwarze Holzbiene

            Xylocopa violacea is a solitary bee and the largest bee occurring in Central Europe. It is abundant in the Mediterranean and spreading to the north. The species hibernates during winter and usually emerges around April/May. I was quite surprised to find this individual today on a piece of deadwood. It was a beautiful and sunny day  today, but nevertheless very early for a carpenter bee to show up.
