De oude watertoren | The Old Water Tower

De voormalige Byrrh-vestigingen in Brussel getuigen van het rijke industriële verleden van de regio.

Het industrieel complex in eclectische stijl, bestaande uit administratiegebouwen, opslagplaatsen en bottelarijen, werd in 1923 ontworpen door de Franse architect Anatole Laquerrière met de medewerking van de architecten G.Dufas en G. Martin en gebouwd van 1923 tot 1925.

In 1923 lieten de gebroeders Violet in Brussel een filiaal bouwen voor de opslag, het bottelen en de distributie van hun A-merk, Byrrh, een met kina gearomatiseerde aperitiefwijn. De architectuur van het Brusselse filiaal moest herinneren aan de pittoreske architectuur van het moederbedrijf in Thuir, in de oostelijke Pyreneeën.
Het complex kreeg de typische reclamegevel van de wijnstapelhuizen in zuidwest Frankrijk, versierd met graffiti die wijn evoceren en met de opschriften “Byrrh” en “Violet” op verschillende prominente plaatsen.

Na de overname van de maatschappij in 1961 en als gevolg van de toenemende concurrentie op de markt van aperitieven, werden de buitenlandse filialen verkocht.

In 2007 werd het gebouw overgenomen door het OCMW van de stad Brussel en kreeg het diverse bestemmingen, voordat het in 2017-2019 door de associatie Studeo, Ozon en BESP werd gerenoveerd tot bedrijvencentrum Be-Here, met respect voor het gebouw en met hergebruik van het meeste raamwerk en de metalen luiken.

The former Byrrh sites in Brussels bear witness to the region's rich industrial past.

The eclectic-style industrial complex, comprising administration buildings, warehouses and bottling plants, was designed in 1923 by the French architect Anatole Laquerrière with the collaboration of architects G.Dufas and G. Martin and built from 1923 to 1925.

In 1923, the Violet brothers built a branch in Brussels for the storage, bottling and distribution of their A-brand, Byrrh, a cinchona-flavoured aperitif wine. The architecture of the Brussels branch was supposed to recall the picturesque architecture of the parent company in Thuir, in the Eastern Pyrenees.
The complex was given the typical advertising facade of the wine warehouses in southwest France, decorated with graffiti evoking wine and with the inscriptions “Byrrh” and “Violet” in several prominent places.

After the takeover of the company in 1961 and as a result of increasing competition in the aperitif market, the foreign branches were sold.

In 2007, the building was taken over by the CPAS of the City of Brussels and given various uses, before being renovated in 2017-2019 by the association Studeo, Ozon and BESP into a business center Be-Here, with respect for the building and with reuse of most of the framework and metal shutters.
