A mated pair of herring gulls - monogamous and life-long partners.

I was sitting in the car at Girvan Harbour when I saw a big gull aggressively chase a yearling. The big one, I’ll call him Clyde, kept flying at, and chasing, the youngster who was intent on staying with his mother. It soon became apparent that Clyde was with his forever love, Bonnie, and Junior was the last of their chicks from 2017.  In order to continue the pair’s life together, there must be an “empty nest” so the youngster was cruelly and finally ousted by his father. 

When Junior eventually left, Bonnie & Clyde began their mating dance...In broad daylight, with people around. Not judging. Just saying...They were singing together, screaming and guldering (!) in harmony at the sky, paddling past each other and turning around to then pass on the other side. Honestly, the were standing staring into each other’s eyes! Then came the kissing...

I had to drive away to preserve their modesty. ☺️
