Commentary.

In the recent past, too many of the UK’s resorts
have declined into a shabby, run-down state.
Lacking investment, renewal and renovation,
their appeal waned.

since the 1960’s and 70’s, recession and a move by tourists to seek cheaper package holidays in Mediterranean climes,
created a failing economic legacy, that is still being felt,
well into the 21st. Century.

Of course, there are a number of notable exceptions,
and, here, Eastbourne, is a case in point.
Its promenade of mostly Georgian and Regency facades
is smart, maintained, solid, timeless, classic and impressive.

Gardens along the Promenade are colourful
and spectacular in Spring and Summer.
The pier is bright, well-maintained, vibrant and popular.

The beaches are clean, popular and vast with five miles of “groyned” sections.
At its western end Beachy Head forms an impressive landmark.
Redoubt Fort, Martello Towers and expansive green spaces
form interesting and pleasant focal points, to the east.

In this shot, on a blistering Mid-Summer’s Day the gardens, promenade and pier appear as they should –
a credit to this very inspiring East Sussex resort.
