Commentary.

The setting sun’s rays,
Sandwiched between ancient,
Rounded, granite moorland
and sombre evening clouds.
Crossing Dartmoor between Two Bridges
and Moretonhampstead, the moor presents its heart and soul.
Bare, rounded heather-clad moor,
topped on the horizon by pointed granite monoliths or Tors.
Ambling, steep-sided and wooded valleys with cascading becks.
Wide skies over a wide landscape.
Wild Dartmoor ponies with their foals
graze rough pasture in dips and hollows of the “Great Swamp.”
Unexpected Highland “Coos” with their red, shaggy coats
and huge, ominous, upturned, pointed horns were
not distracted from their grazing as we passed.
These handsome beasts are well suited to the
bleak conditions that can descend on the moor.
On summer days like this, the moor is
renowned for its distant views and an open,
fresh-air freedom to roam.
Little imagination is needed to picture
bleak, dark, winter days when the mists descend
and the “Great Swamp” can disorientate the canniest of walkers.
Senses diminished our imagination can run riot.
Legends of howling hounds and “hairy hands”
can all too easily re-incarnate in our minds.
Terrified and utterly lost the swamp can swallow the weary traveller
in bog and quicksand, never to be seen again.
