Famous estuary of the River Dart from "Greenway" Boathouse, two miles upstream from Dartmouth and Kingswear.

            Poem.

Like moss-covered logs rolling down to the briny river.
Like verdant, embroidered cushions bulging up from the snake-like coils of the winding River Dart, past muddied banks and creeks, on its perpetual wanderings to the sea.
These broadleaved woods and emerald fields are the
ethereal, iconic and quintessential soul of South Devon
meeting the twisted, branching, channelled rias  so common on the southern shores of Devon and Cornwall.
Where ferries ply their vehicle and foot passengers
to and fro across the Dart, a plethora of yachts and leisure boats swarm around  the harbours and marinas of Dartmouth and Kingswear.
Their masts are like an army of upright stick insects
gorging on their favourite leaf.
Here, the “leaf” is the tidal Dart speckled with up and down river traffic like pond-skaters skimming across streams and puddles.
The river and hills are transformed by pink, white, blue yellow and green dwellings that tumble irregularly down twisting lanes to the harbours below,  like a child’s set of coloured building blocks.
What this amazing river lacks in distance, it surely makes up for in charm, character, splendour and a long, active and fascinating history.
An “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,” indeed!
