Another vineyard replaces part of a golf-course, a sign of global warming? Mannings Heath, High Weald of West Sussex.

            Commentary.

There was a time when vineyards,
in South-East England, were a rare sight.
Now, between one and two hundred exist.
On the North Downs, at Shere and Dorking, in Surrey
over 300 acres of vine produces excellent wines.
Near the South Downs in East Sussex,
Ditchling is surrounded by several vineyards.
Kent, the Garden of England,
still has its orchards, and its own fair share of vineyards, too.
Here, in the High Weald of West Sussex,
what was part of a golf course has been
converted to wine production.
It is now known as the Mannings Heath
Golf and Wine Estate.
Usually south-facing, as here,
the protected young vines
contrast markedly with the heavily wooded
north-facing slopes of Spruce, Scots Pine
and a swathe of beige Silver Birch,
turning green as the buds burst open.
