Mértola (Portugal) - a photo on Flickriver

                      Mértola es un pueblo medieval encaramado sobre unas colinas rocosas que se alzan a los pies del río Guadiana, en la región del Baixo Alentejo, Portugal.
Atravesar sus gruesas murallas exteriores y entrar en la ciudad antigua es como viajar hacia atrás en el tiempo. Sus calles empedradas resultan un lugar placentero para deambular.
Sobre la ciudad aparece un castillo pequeño pero importante, que domina un conjunto de casas blancas y una pintoresca iglesia que en tiempos pasados fue una mezquita.
Esta aislada población ha pasado por un largo período de estancamiento económico, lo cual ha favorecido la conservación de muchos vestigios de la ocupación islámica, hasta el punto de que Mértola es considerada como una Vila Museu (villa museo) y uno de los pueblos portugueses que mejor conservan su esencia árabe.
Es recomendable acceder al casco antiguo desde el río, por las escaleras que suben hasta la atractiva Torre do Relógio (siglo XVII), para disfrutar de unas de las mejores vistas panorámicas sobre la ciudad. A continuación merece la pena visitar la Iglesia de Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
En lo alto encontrarás el Castillo de Mértola, con una esbelta torre del homenaje almenada construida en el año 1292 por D. João Fernandes, maestro de la Orden de Santiago; y cinco torreones que refuerzan los ángulos de la muralla. Frente a la entrada quedan las ruinas del foro romano de Mirtilis, al que se superpuso la alcazaba musulmana. En sus excavaciones han aparecido varios mosaicos y otras piezas de gran valor histórico que hoy en día permanecen expuestas en el Museo Arqueológico de Forum-Alcazaba.
La localidad cuenta con otros cuatro núcleos museológicos interesantes (con billete económico y único para todos). Intramuros y junto a la Porta da Ribeira aparecen el Museo de arte Islámico y el Museo de Arte Sacro; mientras que fuera del recinto quedan la Cooperativa de Tecelagem, un antiguo telar, y el Museo Paleocristiano (Museu Paleocristião), que ocupa lo que fue la basílica del siglo V-VIII.
Para pasear por el río se puede alquilar una barca o un kayak. Al otro lado de la orilla destaca el Convento de São Francisco con un interesante jardín botánico.
Cabe mencionar que gran parte de este municipio queda dentro del Parque Natural del Vale del Guadiana, dotado de una rica variedad de flora y fauna y de varios restos prehistóricos interesantes.
