a man alone

            One hand was holding the rail
the other pushed deep in his pocket,
his eyes the color of sky, just as unfocused,
swirls of fog making his thoughts drift away
and what he remembered of her now so little
and what she remembered of him he did not know 
but the smell of the sea and dead fish were strong
and the air cool and damp and his last memory of her 
in a long, pastel blue dress and moist eyes, as if she
had been crying, was one he might have imagined
or dreamed but nevertheless, she was gone, he was alone,
the tide sadly incessant, in and out, something he thought, 
but was not sure, had to do with the moon.
