Van Buren Local

            Maine Northern Railway Train 521-2 enters the US after switching out the massive Irving Woodlands Grand Rivere sawmill in Saint-Leonard, New Brunswick on 9/2/2024. 

521 is a local based out of Van Buren that serves the lumber reload, the LaJoie Growers warehouse and transload, the CN interchange and the mill. Even with a three man crew, they worked a full 12 hours. Traffic from LP is interchanged with CN here along with a lot of paper from Madawaska. On this day, the crew pulled 40 something wood chip loads from the mill along with 12 lumber loads. While the head end of the train is in Maine, the rear of the train is still clearing the switch off of CN's Saint-Leonard Siding on the Napadogan Subdivision. 

Out of view behind the trees is the international bridge, a 5 span truss bridge spanning the Saint John River between Maine and New Brunswick, originally built by Bangor and Aroostook subsidiary the Van Buren Bridge Company between 1913 and 1915. 

NBM Railways recently just finished a major rehab project here in Van Buren, with new 115 LBS rail being placed in much of the yard along with new 115 LBS turnouts, new ties, drainage improvements and I believe bridge work.

Since this was taken, NBSR GP40-2 3068, was shipped off to Progress Rail to become a GP31ECO.
