            Sweet vanilla leaf catching the evening sunlight, lighting up like candles on the forest floor.

Vanilla leaf (Achlys triphylla), a common native plant in the Pacific Northwest, grows in lush carpets of vibrant green on the forest floor during the months of March-June.

Its bottlebrush flowers are formed on a showy spike featuring 8-20 long white stamens above the center point. Reaching to a height of 1’, it spreads out though underground rhizomes to form a dense carpet under native trees and shrubs. 

As a Northwest native herbaceous groundcover, Vanilla Leaf is best known for the vanilla smell of its dried leaves during the winter. The Saanich people of southern Vancouver Island used vanilla-leaf mainly as an insect repellent, gathering bunches of leaves and hanging them to dry indoors to deter flies and mosquitoes.
