DCU Green Lantern #25 Power and Control 5/6

            I slowly open my eyes from the slumber I had last night. I look to my right to see an alarm clock, but it isn't active, the sound is too loud, too much. I roll over to my left and…

My bedroom door… i… it's open… I know I closed it… locked it.. what is… 

I pull my bedsheets over my head and begin to breathe. I take a nice deep breath.

Jessica - 10 lines drawn in the sand, 9 crabs on the land. 8 sticks under their feet, 7 rocks waiting to meet. 6 castles stacked so high, 5 flags planted waving in the sky. 4 kids run and play all day, 3 beer cans lay astray. 2 parents sit and watch their kids have fun, under the bright, 1 and only sun. 

I take another deep breath after finishing the poem.

Jessica - You're ok Jessica, you'll be ok. Just breathe in and out. 

Once finally calming myself enough, I remove the sheet from my head. I open my eyes. I look around my room to see nothing out of the ordinary other than the door.

I slide the covers off and sit at the edge of my bed. I stand up and walk towards the door, exiting into the kitchen/office of my home. I look at my notepad to see nothing. Rent is due soon. I need to write or I'll lose the house. I'll lose my home, my home will be… calm… I have money put away for rent. I'm ok. I need to pay it now. 

Reluctantly, I step over to my closet and pull out a black hoodie. I zip it up all the way and put the hood on. I look to the mirror but I can still see me. I try and use the hood as best I can but it covers as much as it can. 

I step outside my door and begin walking down the street. I can hear my heart thump with every step. They are watching me walk. I feel sweat draining from my face, they think something is wrong with me. They… I stop thinking. 

To my left, I hear what sounds like a gunshot. My whole body is completely frozen. I turn my head to see two men with guns standing over two bodies. I see two more people on their knees. I move my foot forward but I as I'm about to turn the corner, I feel a pistol press up against my back. I feel my heartbeat going off the charts. The sweat on my face is appearing more than it ever has. I can barely breathe. 

Gunman - Let's go ahead and turn right around girly. 

I comply and turn around. We make our way to the alley, my legs feel like twigs at this point. With a slight push I'm on the ground with the two living people. 

Gunman - We got ourselves a snooper. 

Other gunman - At least she's a pretty one, could have some use. 

I feel not only sweat making my face damp, but tears coming out of my eyes as well. 

I hear two gunshots as I'm on my knees looking at the ground. Two more bodies hit the floor leaving me alone. My heart is racing so fast that my vision starts to blur. Before it goes completely away, I see a bright green light appear. My eyes open to see a ring floating in front of me. I look to the two men but they have ring shaped holes in their heads. 

Jessica - Don't hurt me!

Power Ring - Jessica Cruz, it is time to embrace your fears… 

The ring flies towards my finger. I try and pull away but it makes it on anyways. Everything around me goes black in that moment. All I can see are two small holes. I look through it to see the street. To see my hands. My body, without me.
