The old church of San Pedro was built in the very heart of the medieval city not far from the Puerta de San Pedro.
Known as the Church of San Pedro and San Ildefonso, it was built on a Visigothic church. The Church of San Ildefonso was reformed in Romanesque style during the 12th century, conserving the façade, the main chapel and a rose window.
Don Juan de Aguilar declared it an Archpriest Church in the year 1500 and in 1974 it was declared a National Monument.
Ordered to be built on the old Visigothic church of Santa Leocacia, by Fernando I of León and Castile, it holds the remains of San Ildefonso, father of the Latin Church, and San Atilano, first bishop of Zamora.
In the 12th and 13th centuries it was enlarged and reformed, and in the 15th century it underwent modifications that left little of its Romanesque origin. The only thing that remains is: the south wall, part of the north, the semicircular central apse, the gable, the north doorway, located behind the current neoclassical one, and the south doorway. It's original plan was changed, which went from having three naves and three apses, to a single roof with a ribbed vault and a semicircular apse, for which it was necessary to add two flying buttresses.
