About to cross the Puente del Hierro, 1882, Calle Sagasta, Logroño, La Rioja, Spain

            The Iron Bridge of Logroño is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Ebro River as it passes through the Rioja capital. It was inaugurated in 1882 and has a length of 330 meters.

It consists of 11 sections of 30 meters each, designed at a height with respect to the lowest level of the river of about eight meters, sufficient height to save the great floods of the Ebro at certain times of the year, such as those that occurred in the years 1775 . 1831 and 1871 , which surpassed the bridge by one meter. It was built following a project by the engineer Fermín Manso de Zúñiga .

The pillars are 12.60 meters high, and are circular in shape and lined with large iron sheets . It has two platforms for foot traffic and a lane for cars. A total of approximately 1,106 tons of iron were used, and its cost rose to 547,479 pesetas . The project was approved on 24 October of the 1881 , and inaugurated on 18 of December of 1882 , feast of Our Lady of Hope, Patroness of Logroño . Práxedes Mateo Sagasta promoted its construction after the collapse of a military flying bridge, which occurred on September 1 ,1880 , in which ninety soldiers died.
