Nature's architechture Ripples - a photo on Flickriver

            When water flows over loose sediments spectacular structures are produced. The picture above is called ripples. Direction of water flow and the height of the water column can be ascertained from the size (amplitude) and  shapes of the ripples . In the present photograph the current direction is from left to right. These ripples are lithified (converted to rock) and are used to calculate the flow parameters of the water bodies that existed millions to billions of years before. This structure also serves as a testimony to the presence of water on planet.
