" The Lairds of Drumbawn " - a photo on Flickriver

These two Scottish Pine Trees are growing on the lower slopes of Drumbawn Hill, quite close to where I live. The tree on the right is over 200 years old whereas the left hand one is a much younger tree. I have given them the title "Lairds" because of the Scottish connection. These pines are native to Scotland but they are also native to Ireland sort of. Well, they were and they were not and now they are!!! Ill explain it in a story;

"The Tale of the Lonesome Pines"
These pine trees were native to Ireland, thousands of years ago. We didnt call them Scots pines then. No! We probably called the Ugh! Mind you, all those years ago we called most things Ugh. Really special things that we got excited about, we would call "Ugh Ugh!" Pine trees were everywhere. They grew like weeds, and then disaster struck! The second ice age came and everything perished. The pine trees died and when the great melt came they rotted into the ground and helped to form the great peat bogs of Ireland, such as the "Bog of Alan" which covers most of the midlands. Even to this day, often lots of preserved pine trees which are thousands of years old are pulled out of the bog. They are much prized by sculpturers and wood carvers and are called "Bog Deale". I have a natural "golden brown" walking stick which I found in Ballycumber Bog, Co. Offaly.
Man eventually returned to Europe and life began again. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Plantation of Ireland[ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantations_of_Ireland ] began where the British crown gave vast areas of Ireland to English aristocracy for there loyalty and allegience. Many of the natives were driven off and became workers on their own land.
Lots of these settlers were familiar with the pines of the Caladonian pine forests of Scotland. It had survived most of the ice age and the trees there had continued to flourish. They decided to import them for their estates, and hundreds of thousands were planted here. However, they were put in the wrong places and many died as the wet ground didnt suit them. Some still survive such as those in the "Coronation Plantation".

"Scots Pines" do not self seed here as the climate is too mild. However, we do produce our own now and there are some wonderful plantations here in the mountains.
Of course people love sticking fancy names on our native flora and fauna and some genius decided to give these trees a Latin title to avoid any confusion. He named them "Pinus sylvestris" which apparently means Forrest Pine. However, we here ignore such rubbish and continue to call them Scots Pines, as thats what they are and I for one, think that it explains the history of these wonderful trees, perfectly!
