" Trains and Tides Wait for No Man "

Bridge Collapse 2009.
View across the Broadwater Estuary towards the railway viaduct and embankment at Malahide Co. Dublin. The photos is taken from Donabate at Malahide Point over 1km away so please forgive the slight fuzziness.
In the foreground sits an old dredger which was used to clear the channel but it has now become a victim itself and is stuck firmly the mud.. Directly behind it is the 180 meter bridge with the water draining from the higher estuary into the lower one on the seaward side and part of the 600m embankment which runs to Donabate on the north side of the estuary. Malahide station is just beyond the bridge to the left.
A new section of the bridge is visible as the old one collapsed in August 2009. The 6.30pm train similar to the one in the photo was crossing the bridge into Malahide station when the driver noticed movement on a 20m section ahead of him. He immediately turned off the engine to try and stop any vibration and allowed the train to freewheel across. He had just crossed when part of the bridge collapsed. Fortunately no one was injured. The train was fairly full at the time.His quick thinking saved a lot of lives.
This is the main Dublin to Belfast rail track and it carries up to 90 trains a day and a lot of freight backwards and forwards.
The bridge has now been reinforced with new piles driven into the the bedrock under the existing supports and it is being monitored daily.
Its a very pretty place and a walkers and birdwatchers paradise.
