 { Stonehenge in England is only 2-3000 years old and remade into a circle as they were all lying on the ground. Many of them are patched with concrete! [circa 1850] I was very disappointed 
  Seefin is totally unspoiled or touched as its away off the beaten track thankfully!}

    Ive reposted this as a tribute to the great Leonard as the title were the words in one of his songs! What a beautiful phrase! He was a Master and the World is now a happier and much sadder place without him!

                             The Story
In the Neolithic period, 5000 years ago before there were written records, away to the south west there was a province called Gallecia,in  Spain. The people who lived there were called Celts, a mixture of nomadic tribes from the upper reaches of the Rhine valleys and as far north as Switzerland. They had settled here for about 1000 years previous in a period called the New Stone Age having crossed overland seeking out new lands
. They were sailors fishermen and farmers who tilled the land, grew grain raised cattle and reared their children. They were a peace loving people who were very happy here in there sun drenched lands but something happened. No one is exactly certain. Perhaps it was a plague or a tribal war, but it is though more likely that raiders from North Africa began to plunder their lands and homes. Many died but some decided to leave and seek a new place so they set sail. The Gulf stream carried them north west across the Bay of Biscay towards the south east of Ireland. No one knows what the country was called at that time but it would have been a lush green fertile isle, densely wooded and much warmer than it is now.
     They sailed up the rivers on the east coast.The Boyne, The Liffey, and The Slaney were the main ones. These are considered the sacred rivers of Ireland with The Boyne being the most import and and called the mother godess river.Women had equal status with men and family law, with  woman as the head of the family as being the giver of life took president over everything. The people settled in the valleys overlooked by the mountains and they cleared the land and built large circular enclosures with earth and stone embankments which are called Raths. Within these they built there houses of stone and wood and kept their animals during night time as protection from wild animals. They cultivated the land, grew crops and raised their children as before and split into various tribes each having its own Chieftain as  a ruler whose word was law. On the mountains overlooking there homes the constructed huge Cairns underneath which were burial chambers where they buried the rulers of their tribe. They are called passage graves and they all have an unrestricted view east towards the sea and the rising sun which in many cases shines down the narrow passage [ as in my photo ]  at dawn on the Winter Solstice on the 21st of December and lights up the burial chamber An amazing feat of stone age engineering { See Newgrange and the Boyne Valley }.
  There are many such graves here on the east coast. Some have been excavated and some have not. Seefingan, a neighbouring mountain remains untouched and rightly so.
Seefin was excavated in 1938 and they found 5 burial chambers. All were empty and no human remains were found apart from 2 rock carvings within the passageway.. Its though that the people who lived there moved on for whatever reason, taking the bones of there venerated leaders and ancestors with them or perhaps they are interred on some other mountain here. Who knows and perhaps its better that we don't know. 
  It was always thought that Irish people were descended  from the Vikings but in recent dna tests, its been discovered that we originally came from Spain.
  Ive taken lots of photos of  megaliths etc, but it is a specialist type of interest. I will put up more photos for those who are interested.
 I took the photo through the passageway with the burial chamber lit up by the sun. Im very happy with it as its exactly as taken and not processed. If you zoom on you can see the moss on the vertical stone which forms part of the 5 chambers.
