"The richly coloured flower-spikes of this banksia change from silver-grey to rich pink to orange and pink as they develop.  The colours contrast beautifully with the greyish-green leaves. Other characteristics of of banksias are clearly evident.  Its many cones have prominent beaks, the leaves are toothed, the bark lumpy and the trees crooked and gnarled.  .....
Honey eating birds such as the western spinebill, the red and little wattle birds, andthe singing brown and New Holland honeeaters drink the nectar during its long flowering period.
Its cones are used by the burrowing larvae of two species of weevil, and the larva of a moth burrows in the flower spikes.
Firewood banksia and candle banksia, the two commonest banksias on Perth's coastal plain, are nearly always found together.  One of the two is almost always in flower.  Firewood banksia flowers over one half of the year (autumn to early spring) and candle banksia for the other.  This timing possibly evolved so that the two species should not compete for pollinators.   Some fauna depend on a supply of nectar the whole year round, and these two banksias almost ensure this."
