Old town Echuca on the Murray River, Australia

            The Murray flows 1,570 miles across southeast Australia and is the largest single river in Australia and the 3rd longest navigable river in the world.  It is 6 million years old.

Echuca was founded in 1853 and became the largest inland port in Australia.
River boat trade was of national importance as it opened up inland Australia for settlement  increasing the country's wool trade.
1870's the district supported a dozen mills, cutting in excess of 1000 logs per week until the depression in 1890's.
By the 1920's the river trade became defunct with the extension of railways and today Echuca port is now home to the largest collection of paddle steamers in Australia.
