A wise old ... chick! - a photo on Flickriver

            Being follicaly challenged on top and sporting grey whiskers, this Common Gallinule chick looks rather old for its tender age!

It was one of six Common Gallinule chicks that we saw pretty much every day over a two week period in May at Lakes Regional Park, Fort Myers. The park has many predators including alligators, herons and birds of prey and the parents did a remarkable job of keeping all six chicks safe during the time of our stay. The parents gave a number of Great Blue Herons some real grief whenever they strayed too close to the chicks but they were relatively relaxed about people 'oooooing' and 'aaahhhing' and taking photographs of them!
