Manastirea PUTNA: Mormânt de Stefan Cel Mare

Putna Monastery is a monastic Orthodox place, one of the most important Romanian cultural, religious and artistic centers. It was nicknamed "The Jerusalem of the Romanian People" (Mihai Eminescu).
According to the old Moldovan chronicles, the construction of the monastery, founded by Stefan cel Mare (whose tomb is here), began in 1466 and ended in 1469. Right after Stefan cel Mare won the battle in which he conquered the Kilia citadel, he began work on the monastery as a means to give thanks to God, on July 10, 1466
The precinct, the entrance tower and the fortifications were completed in 1481.
About 1653, the church of the monastery was devastated by the  Timus Hmelnitsky's Cossacks . 
The reconstruction works were started by the voivode Vasile Lupu in 1653, continued by Gheorghe Stefan (1653-1658) and completed, under the reign of Eustatie Dabija, in 1662. The monastery was restored between 1756-1760 by the care of Metropolitan Iacob Putneanul, then in 1902, when the roof was restored following the plans of the architect Karl Romstorfer, and, more recently, between 1961-1975.
