Iacobeni (Transylvania): Biserica fortificată din Iacobeni

            The Evangelical Church of Iacobeni (Sibiu County) was built in the 14th century, on the site of an old church, probably destroyed by the Tatars during their invasion in 1241.
The tower of the keep at the west end of the room, 26 meters high, was built in the 15th century with walls which are about three meters thick. The fourth and fifth levels of the dungeon have arcades for archers and shooters. In the last quarters, the sixth and the seventh which are above the level of the church are found on all sides. 
The watchtower route is suspended by wooden consoles and houses three bells made in the 20th century.
The ship and the choir were fortified with a defense floor which provided a 2 m high parapet with ramparts supported on defense arches, which takes place between the 18 abutments surrounding the church. Between the arches of the abutments there are machicolations by which boiled water or molten pitch was poured over the besiegers.
The church is surrounded by walls with an irregular path, the weight of which rests on the abutments, on the steep side of the hill. The tower has two levels, a railing road with a parapet and an entrance blocked by a ridge. In the northern part, a courtyard was built, which was defended by a bastion, which was then transformed into a house with the destination of the caretaker's residence.
