Gondola of the Newport transporter bridge

The Newport transporter bridge crosses the river Usk and is the lowest crossing,
It was designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin in 1906 and was opened on 12th September of that year,
It then closed in 1985 due to wear and tear , and with 3 million to refurbish it , it reopened in 1995, it closed again in December 2008 and a further 1.25million was spent with grants from the welsh government and Cadw, it reopened in 2010, it is scheduled to close again at some point next year to have all the steel cable replaced
You can at the current time walk the 278 steps up the tower over the top and get the gondola back across to where you have started
The Newport bridge is the oldest of the three remaining in Britain today , is a grade 1 listed structure and is one of fewer than 10 left in the world today,

the towers rise 241 feet high
the centre span is 645 feet
by comparison to Middlesbrough Newport is 16 feet taller
but is 75ft less in overall length
