Easdale - a photo on Flickriver

Easdale

            Easdale is one of the slate islands which was once the centre for British slate, it is only a small island 62 acres, but even so at it's height 500 men worked 7 quarries, , some of which were 300feet below sea level, Easdale slate was exported to Melbourne, Nova Scotia amongst other places , sadly in the mid to late 1800's (some reports say 1850, some say 1881), the was a massive storm which flooded the quarries from the sea and given they had no method of pumping the quarries, the quarrying declined dramatically overnight, with the last of the slate being cut in the 1950's , by the 1960's the islands community had dwindled to just 4 and all seemed doomed, but with a different outlook, tourism and communitys pulling together the future looks bright and it is now the smallest permanantly inhahbited island with around 60 inhabitants in the inner hebrides
