A day out in Whitehaven: old pit head wheel

            Whitehaven was founded in 1633 as a small port when the first quay was built to export Salt and coal, over the years it grew into a busy port and also got involved in shipbuilding, the 2nd quay was the Bulwalk quay which was rebuilt in 1711, by 1730 whitehaven had some of the deepest coalmines in the world , some running under the sea, the remnants of the Wellington mine can be seen today, the west pier and outer harbour where built in  1832 , by the late 19th century almost all the harbour network had a rail system and in , the last being used in 1986,
since 1990 some 20 million pound in grant funding has been made, which has greatly improved public access, employment opportunities and hosted maritime festivals
