Hêtre pleureur - 1860

Au cœur du jardin botanique de Bayeux, pousse l’un des arbres les plus étonnants de France, un hêtre pleureur.

Toutefois l’appellation « hêtre pleureur » ne vient pas de sa variété, mais de son aspect général. En effet, il semblerait que ce ne soit pas la forme pleureuse du hêtre (Fagus sylvatica ‘pendula’) mais la forme tortueuse (Fagus sylvatica f. tortuosa (Pépin) Hegi), qui a été greffée sur un tronc de hêtre commun (Fagus sylvatica).

Des doutes, il y en a aussi sur son âge, la date précise de plantation n’est pas connue, mais il semblerait qu’il ai été planté vers 1860, date de la création du jardin par Eugène Bühler. Il aurait donc environ 150 ans.
 
Côté mensurations, il présente une circonférence de tronc de 3,57 m, le houppier a une envergure de 40 m environ et couvrirait 1250 m².
