Ready to Go to Ground - a photo on Flickriver

            This Arctic Ground Squirrel is perched just above it's burrow and ready to dive in at the first sight of danger. They live in burrows in the ground rather than nests in the trees like most other squirrels. This one looks to have a good summer coat on - the red fur - where in winter it changes to a more silvery coloration. I found several of these interesting mammals in Denali Park along the Savage River Loop Trail during our visit last week.
